I agree to a certain extent that your eating habits will be dictated by who you hang around with. Where you live also has an influence. People who move to the US from a country that typically eats healthier, gain weight. As the so called 'western diet' moves to countries like India, obesity and diabetes follow.

In neighborhoods like mine where most people cook real food and are active, you don't see very many overweight people. I can only think of one who is obese - and he has no tastebuds. Weird, I know.

I'm happy to be a thin influencer. It feels good when people realize that it's really not that difficult to change to a healthy lifestyle. You're absolutely right Vicki - It's just habit.

The really good news is, once you start getting used to new habits, you'll never want to go back. It feels great!

It's interesting and important that you mention the community aspect of weight-loss. It seems strange and counterintuitive to some people, but obesity can be viewed as an epidemic that spreads through social networks. There's an interesting NY Times article on this, based on a somewhat recent research study:

http://www.nytimes.com/2007/07/25/health/25cnd-fat.html

The flipside of this though is that having people in your social network who are losing weight and/or living healthy lifestyles can help and encourage you to do the same.

If you want to lose weight, it's really important to have social support--and not just from people who want to lose weight, but from people who either are losing weight, or from people who are a healthy weight. Habits (good and bad) can be contagious...following rules and guidelines of a diet or exercise program is something that doesn't come naturally to most people. But being influenced by the behaviors of those around us is something that humans do naturally, often effortlessly...so why not use it to your advantage?
